Navigator > Setup > Inventory Control > Units of Measure
Setup Units of Measure (UOM) for Inventory Control. This allows you to enter products in convenient units (such as boxes or packs) and have the system do the conversion work. When UOM Status is Active, UOM can be used for products.
The code EA (Each) is included by default in new companies.
UOM Status |
Determines whether UOM is used. None, all UOM fields and options other than this form are unavailable. Pending, UOM Tab is available so UOMs can be set up and validated. A Default UOM Code is required. Active, UOM is available for all documents and transactions. Warning: If you turn off UOM (that is, change UOM from Active to None), you will be prompted to back up your data, as UOM Codes will be removed from all affected products, documents and transactions. If you experience power or other failure during processing, restore the backup and turn off UOM again. |
|||
UOM Required |
Selected, a Base UOM is required for all products. |
|||
Use Strict UOM Quantities |
Clear, the constraint tying UOM to Base decimals is relaxed. This means rounding may occur, as the UOM Quantity * UOM Multiplier = BaseQuantity (rounded) will no long have to be able to return exactly the original UOM Quantity for BaseQuantity / UOM Multiplier. |

Fields |
||||
Code |
A unique code of up to 8 characters that can include both letters and digits. |
|||
Name |
The UOM name associated with the code. |
|||
Description |
Description of the Unit of Measure. |
|||
Group Code |
The type of Unit of Measure. See IC UOM Groups. |
|||
Decimals |
The number of decimal places allowed for the UOM. The Decimals plus the number of decimal places in the Multiplier cannot be greater than the Base UOM Decimals. This is so that quantities calculated as UOM Quantity * UOM Multiplier can always be expressed in Base UOM decimals without rounding. |
|||
Multiplier |
When used as an Other UOM the value to multiply the Base UOM by. e.g. With a Base UOM for a Group TIME of HOUR; the multiplier for the UOM DAY may then be 8 (hours). When used as Base UOM the Multiplier is set to 1 in the Product UOM regardless of the Multiplier specified here. If Use Strict UOM Quantities is Selected then the number of decimal places in the Multiplier plus the Decimals cannot be greater than the Base UOM Decimals. This is so that quantities calculated as UOM Quantity * UOM Multiplier can always be expressed in Base UOM decimals without rounding. |
|||
Base |
Selected, the UOM may be used as a Base UOM. Unselected, the UOM may not be used as a Base UOM. Defaults to Selected when a UOM Multiplier is set to 1. May be selected for UOM codes with any multiplier or none. Multiplier will automatically set to 1 when used as Base UOM for a Product. |
|||
Fixed Multiplier |
Selected, the Multiplier is fixed and cannot be changed for Other UOM on a Product. Unselected, the Multiplier is variable and will be set per Product for Other UOM. This is calculated and read-only. When a Multiplier is set, Fixed Multiplier is set to Selected. To have a variable multiplier, leave the Multiplier field blank. |
|||
Add'l Weight |
Additional weight for the UOM. For example, a PALLET UOM may have its own weight, to be added to the product weight. Additional Weight must be expressed in the Base UOM for Group WEIGHT. |
|||
Add'l Volume |
Additional volume for the UOM. For example, a BOX UOM may have its own volume, to be added to the product volume. Additional volume must be expressed in the Base UOM for Group VOLUME. |

Note: UOM is a data entry convenience, and does not recognise the configuration of stock held. It recognises the quantity of stock in the base UOM, and performs calculations from this. For example, if you have 3m of timber in stock, UOM does not recognise if this is three separate 1m lengths, or one 3m length. You can set up separate IC Products to represent different configurations.
