Units of Measure (UOM)

Products are often bought and sold in measurements, such as weight, length or volume, or can be bought and sold in bulk, such as in boxes or sets.

You can set up Units of Measure (UOM) in IC to represent the measurement units you use.

Some examples of Units or Measure are:

Group

Measure

Volume

Millilitre

Weight

Kilogram

Count

Each

Count

Box

Count

Pallet

Time

Hour

Length

Centimetre

Length

Inch

For example, you may wish to sell products in boxes of 20, rather than individually, or you may purchase timber in metres, or food in kilograms. IC Units of Measure allows you to specify this.

Each Company has a UOM Status, which can be set to:

Setting up UOM

Units of measure are grouped in UOM Groups. To set up UOM Groups, go to:

Navigator > Setup > Inventory Control > UOM Groups. Default groups are Area, Count, Length, Time, Volume, and Weight.

To set up Units of Measure, go to:

Navigator > Setup > Inventory Control > Units of Measure.

Here you can set the company UOM Status.

Each UOM Group must have a Base UOM. The Base UOM has a Multiplier of 1. For example, for the group Count, the Base UOM could be Each.

Other UOMs in the group must have a multiplier relative to the base UOM. For example, for the group Count, another UOM could be Box with a Multiplier of 10, to show that 10 units are in each box.

If you select UOM Required, all active Products must have a Base UOM set. You must set the Base UOM for all products before you can select the UOM Required option.

UOMs have the following fields:

Decimals - The number of decimal places that can be used for the UOM. UOMs in a UOM Group cannot have more decimal places than the Base UOM. This ensures all UOMs in the UOM Group can be accurately represented in the Base UOM. Some products will have no decimals, such as the Each UOM, as there are products such as a Wardrobe, that can only be sold in whole measures. The maximum Decimals is 2. For example, if the UOM Group Length has a Base UOM as Centimetre (cm) with a Multiplier of 1, and another UOM Inch (in) with a Multiplier of 2.54, the Base UOM Centimetre will require Decimals of 2, and Inch will require Decimals of 0, to ensure that Inches can be represented as Centimetres.

Multiplier - The amount to multiply the Base UOM by, for this UOM. For example, if you sell products in boxes of 20, a Box UOM could have a multiplier of 20. If the UOM Group Length has a Base UOM of Centimetre, another UOM Millimetre would have a multiplier of 0.1.

Fixed Multiplier - If a Multiplier is entered, Fixed Multiplier will be Selected. For example, if you have Boxes of products with varying quantities, you can leave the Multiplier blank; when you select the UOM Box for a product, you can enter the Multiplier for that particular product in the Product form.

Add'l Weight and Add'l Volume - If a UOM has additional weight or volume, you can add them here. For example, a container such as a wooden Pallet may have its own weight and/or volume, to be added to the product weight and/or volume.

UOM for Products

When UOM is Pending or Active, a UOM tab is available on the IC Product form. Use the UOM tab to set a Base UOM for each product. You can also set other UOMs for products; these must be in the same UOM Group as the Base UOM. You can also set a Default Sale UOM and Default Purchase UOM for each product.
